The active ingredient of the drug is metronidazole, which belongs to the group of nitro-5-imidazoles, provides antimicrobial and antiprotozoal activity. The substance prevents the spread of pathogens:
The drug is used with pathogenic microflora sensitive to metronidazole.
20% of the administered dose penetrates into the systemic bloodstream; concentration during a single use is 12%. Binding with plasma proteins is low – 20%. The elimination half-life lasts from 8 to 12 hours.

Contraindications
Flagyl is prescribed to adults for intravaginal administration.
With trichomonas vaginitis is recommended to take 1 suppository per day. The course of treatment lasts 10 days. Combined administration of oral forms of metronidazole is required.
With nonspecific vaginitis it is necessary to apply 1 suppository 2 times a day. The course lasts 7 days. It is mandatory to treat both sexual partners, even if one of them has no symptoms of the disease. In this case, it is acceptable to use the oral form of metronidazole.
Therapy with Flagyl and its analogues lasts no more than 10 days, and no more than 3 courses of treatment are allowed per year.
When amebiasis is prescribed 1500 mg per day, the dosage is divided into 3 doses per day, the period is 7 days.
In giardiasis in adults and children the treatment period is 5 days. The daily dose for adults is 750-1000 mg; children 6-10 years – 375 mg; children 10-15 years – 500 mg per day.
In trichomoniasis, a single dose of 2000 mg or a course of treatment of 500 mg twice a day for 10 days will be sufficient.
In nonspecific vaginitis, 500 mg 2 times a day for a week is prescribed.
In anaerobic infections, 1000-1500 mg per day.

To reduce the risk of adverse reactions, the drug should be used after a full examination and consultation with the attending physician. If there are any abnormal negative symptoms, it is necessary to cancel or adjust the treatment.
It is contraindicated to combine the use of Flagyl with alcohol, because the toxic effects are increased.
During the treatment of trichomonad vaginitis should refrain from sexual intercourse, both partners receive therapy. Menstruation is not a reason to interrupt treatment. After completion of therapy for three subsequent cycles it is necessary to be tested to exclude a secondary infection.
The drug is discontinued when dizziness, hallucinations, ataxia, and worsening neurological conditions occur.
It is not recommended to drive a vehicle and work with moving mechanisms during the use of Flagyl.
Simultaneous use of Flagyl:
